Über dieses Boot

I just realized I've never posted my first-ever RC boat.
My wife gave me this Nitro Vee for Christmas many years ago.
I wanted to dress it up from the stock white with decals, so I took it to a friend who owns a sign shop and had him do custom paint and decals for it.
It hasn't seen water for about as long as it's been since Columbus sailed to America.
Recent posts (Zooma's Avanti) have inspired me to do something with it. And since I/C engine boats are frowned upon in most places, I think I will retrofit it with a nice electric motor.

That is a very similar size to my AVANTI boats and should be just as much fun with a small brushless motor with 3 cell LiPo and a suitable small ESC.

Rather than run over to my shed, I asked my friend Mr. Google. (He is, after all, sort of a know it all, LOL)
Here is what I came up with:

Here are the specifications for the Traxxas 3510 Nitro Vee deep-V offshore racing boat:

    Key Specifications
Hull Length: 31 inches (787 mm)
Beam (Width): 8.5 inches (216 mm)
    Weight: Approx. 3.5 lbs (60 oz / ~1.7 kg)
Advertised Speed: 20+ MPH stock out-of-the-box
Hull Type: Deep-V (designed under license from Ocke Mannerfelt Design)
Power Plant: TRX Pro .15 marine nitro engine with a water-cooled head
Drive System: Direct drive with an in-line centrifugal clutch system (allowing it to idle and hold position in the water without moving)

    Notable Features
Return-to-Shore (RTS) System: A built-in auxiliary electric motor designed to drive the boat back to you if the nitro engine stalls out on the water.

Starting System: Equipped with the Traxxas EZ-Start electric starting system.

    Traxxas Nitro Vee.

    Hi Dave,

This is a smart looking Classic Model Power Boat from the late 1980’s that is being brought up to date by yourself with a change of power unit from nitro to electric.

Your colour scheme looks really good and has improved the appearance of the original - as well as making it uniquely your own.

Age is only a number. I am 77 years young and still enjoy making “white water” and driving with as much enthusiasm as I did in the late 1960’s when I first started my life-long love for driving Classic Model Power Boats and making as much “white water” with them as possible.

So bung in a good brushless motor and enjoy the precise steering and agility that only these types of boat can deliver.

I will follow your build with great interest as I continue to keep growing old as disgracefully as possible and try to encourage you to do the same as you race your boat around the lake .

    Bob.

Thanks for the info, Dave, and especially for converting the terms—it certainly made it easier for me to understand (it is an act of kindness and courtesy that I greatly appreciate).
Please bear with me, but you’ve piqued my curiosity (I have no experience with high-speed powerboats): how long and how heavy is this model? Please, if you don't know offhand, don't go to the trouble of measuring or weighing it just for me.

I'm not going to go crazy with the motor. Our local pond has a 15MPH speed limit.
I do live on a lake, where there is no such limitation.
However, at 74, I've pretty much lost my need for speed.
A nice "scale speed" and stability are more important. The Nitro Vee never was an extremely fast boat, even with the Nitro internal combustion engine.
I'll likely use a 550 brushed motor as a starting point.

Hi Dave, you never forget your first love (even if it is a model boat)—you did the right thing by posting it.
I’m curious: have you decided yet what kind of electric motor to install?
